The Dance Collective is comprised of dancers, artists, and enthusiasts who have come together to inspire self-discovery, create interpersonal connections, and build community through dance. We believe that dance is a vital part of the human experience and that it provides a fundamental support for connecting us all to ourselves, to each other, and to the communities and cultures that we are a part of.
Move the Butte
Move the Butte is a showcase of local dancers, choreographers, and technical crew who work collaboratively to create a dance production that annually has more than 100 local dancers ranging in ability levels from beginner to advanced. Over the past nine years, Move the Butte has had over 400 local participants, many returning every year. Participation in this production is open to anyone over the age of 18 and provides performance and learning opportunities for locals who have never danced or performed in front of audiences before. The impact of Move the Butte reaches far beyond the positive experiences for participants. The intention of this production is to inspire self-discovery, encourage risk taking and stimulate the creative yearnings in participants and audience members alike.
In the fall, the Dance Collective produces a highly creative dance production with a selected cast of dancers and choreographers. This production is intended to be an innovative process that pushes the creative edges of the directors, choreographers, cast, and audiences. Please see archival footage on Vimeo and Facebook for the following fall productions: Dance of the Dead 2012, Gypsy Caravan 2013, Elemental Offerings 2014, Weathering 2015, & The Machine 2016.
These events provide opportunities for choreographers and dancers to perform in a professional setting and receive compensation for their skills. This aspect of our programming benefits the community at large by bringing dance into mainstream venues that give a wide range of audiences exposure to dance they might not otherwise experience. Past for hire events include: The Crested Butte Arts Fair, The 4th of July Parade and Celebration, USA Pro Cycling Challenge, HCCA’s Red Lady Ball, Loco’s NYE event, Montanya Distillery, The Gunnison Public Library, the Gunnison Senior Care Center, and at the Crested Butte Community School.
